Arlington
We have partnered with the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH), whose Sullivan House facility is located in the heart of our community. The Sullivan House is a transitional housing facility where clients reside for three to five months. While there, they receive counseling and referral services as well as assistance in addressing financial issues and learning money-management skills. Nearly 80% of Sullivan House clients secure permanent housing after leaving the program.
A group from Ascension volunteers with the youth at the Sullivan House through their School Kids in Transition (SKIT) program on Wednesday evenings. A team of three to four meets with the youth to play games, work on craft projects, and generally spend quality time with them.
We have also adopted two families for our congregation to support after transition from the Sullivan House. This support includes both financial assistance, allocated through AACH, as well as providing help with daily life struggles such as transportation, preparing for interviews/exams/paperwork for employment, clothing, and other needs specific to the family.
As we build relationships with the children and families, we hope to match their needs with the skills and talents of our congregation. For more information and to learn how to get involved, email local@theascension.org.
