My company is doing a study on the ability of insulated vinyl siding to affect the heating energy use of homes.  We’re looking for one home in the Virginia/MD/DC area to outfit with free insulated vinyl siding for the study.  Home owners have to be in their homes for at least two years prior to and following the installation of the siding (to take place this fall), and agree not to do any energy efficiency improvements to the home over that time period.  They must also supply copies of utility bills to us for two years prior to and two years following the installation of the siding.  Following are some other qualifications that must be met for the home to be a good candidate:

1.   Year of home construction: 1900-1970
2.    Home type: single family detached
3.    Home size (sqft): 1500-4000, including basement
4.    Current siding type: wood, wood composite, vinyl, aluminum, or fiber cement; no asbestos
5.    Structure: wood framed
6.    Wall insulation: must have at least some wall insulation between the studs
7.    Occupancy: owner-occupied for at least two years or stable or long term renters for at least two years
8.    Primary heating fuel: natural gas
9.    Primary heating equipment: furnace
10.  Primary heating equipment efficiency: standard (e.g. single speed, older furnace – typically 70-80 AFUE)
11.  Primary heating distribution system: forced air ducts
12.  No energy efficiency improvements made to the home in the last two years (e.g. new windows, new furnace, added attic insulation)
13.  No frequently used wood burning fireplaces: (may be exceptions for occasional use)
14.  No heated hot tub or pool or other large natural gas loads

An AMiA pastor and his family are coming to the DC area from Wisconsin August 1-7 and are hoping someone can “host” their family as they stay in a 32 foot trailer during their stay in the area.  The person hosting them would need a 30 or 50 amp outlet, a large driveway, and a water spigot.
