Church of the Ascension will be hosting a Help the Homeless Mini-Walk to support Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH) on Saturday, November 5 beginning at 3:00 pm in Lyon Park followed by a Fall Festival with games and a cookout. (Rain location is Christ Church.) All are welcome!

This is a seminar geared towards recent new parents or for those wanting a refresher. Chuck & Melissa will spend the morning discussing how we approach kids at Ascension and offer some further thoughts on parenting. Childcare will be provided. We are forming a team to play in the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless Charity Kickball Tournament! We need 11-15 players in order to sign up. The tournament is Saturday, August 6, at Barcroft Park in Arlington. We’ll have a practice this Saturday, July 23, at 5:00 pm at the park at N Highland and 7th Street N. On Wednesday, May 25 the As We Forgive Rwanda Initiative (AWFRI) will have its DC launch. AWFRI is a new Rwandan reconciliation organization inspired by the student Academy Award-winning documentary, As We Forgive. The event will highlight the work in Rwanda that has been accomplished since the film’s completion, and will also feature a screening of the film and a new 7-minute epilogue. A discussion will be held with filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson, AWFRI co-founder Andrea McDaniel, and Rwandan youth advocate Jean Michel Habineza. A wine and appetizer reception will follow. Wendell, the music director for our sister church and independent singer/songwriter, is opening for Tim Be Told at Jammin’ Java in Vienna tonight, March 22. Doors open at 7:30; admission is $13. Go out and support a good friend playing good music!

On Saturday, November 13, the Galanes family and friends are hosting a yard sale at the Hillwood Community Center. All proceeds from the sale will go to Children’s Hope Chest, a group that provides and advocates for the physical and spiritual needs of vulnerable children around the world—and, in particular, the kids in the Addis Ababa orphanages they visited last year. (Check out this video to see some of the places they were and people they met.)

If you have items to contribute to the sale, you can drop them off at the Galanes house before the 13th. Anything not sold will be taken to Goodwill. The Community Center is located just south of the City of Falls Church, between Hillwood Avenue and Route 50, on the corner of Defense Drive and Cherry Street. The sale will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please come and shop!
