Our Story
In 2002, seeing a shortage of vibrant, Gospel-centered churches in the District of Columbia, a group of people began meeting together with the vision of planting a network of smaller, interconnected churches throughout the city, rather than a single large church. By God’s grace, The Church of the Resurrection was soon established on Capitol Hill. As Resurrection grew, the church began drawing people from different parts of metro Washington.
In June 2008, a group from Northern Virginia began meeting in an Arlington home to discern whether God was leading us to plant a church. Through the hot and cramped nights, we began to sense God’s call to extend the vision across the Potomac. We gathered weekly in a church basement through the fall, and eventually began Sunday services in January 2009 in the building belonging to Christ Church of Arlington.
Arlington, once a quiet bedroom community of Washington, is now a vibrant commercial and residential center in the metro area. Roughly two hundred thousand people live in the county. In many respects, the world has come to Arlington. It is home to the rich and the poor; the insider and the alien; the powerful and the weak. The county is diverse (35% are Latino, African-American, Asian, or multi-racial and 23% foreign born), single (54% unmarried), young (45% under age 35), and highly educated (67% hold graduate or professional degrees). Arlington is a microcosm of the new issues that face us in a global society.
The high educational levels, ethnic diversity, and cultural divergence, present unique challenges to planting a church. However, Arlington also presents us with a tremendous opportunity to proclaim and demonstrate God’s generosity in Christ that reconciles us to him, restores our relationships with one another, and renews the world around us.
